George Tice finds more peace on the water than he does anywhere else.

When the Operation Desert Storm veteran’s mind revisits the day a helicopter crashed near his camp in Saudi Arabia, killing four soldiers, fishing calms his soul.

When he remembers the lone survivor he pulled from the wreckage, a fifth soldier, before the helicopter exploded, being out on a kayak quiets his brain, if only for the moment.

“It’s something I’ll live with the rest of my life,” Tice said. “It will always be there, haunting me.”

On Sunday morning Tice and more than a dozen other Southwest Florida veterans launched their kayaks from Lovers Key State Park in south Lee Countyas part of a program called Heroes on the Water.
