To address the challenges veterans and active-duty military face in long rehabilitation after a major injury , Heroes on the Water is uniquely positioned to provide assistance.
Therapeutic Programs
Our wellness therapy of kayak fishing aids our participants in overcoming the symptoms of post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury. In addition, it provides a peaceful, easily adaptive way to help with balance and confidence. Even more important, the kayak fishing outings provide a way to enjoy camaraderie and support peer-to-peer therapy in a peaceful setting.
How it works
History
The first Heroes on the Water (HOW) therapeutic program grew out of serving the recovering soldiers at Brooke Army Medical Center’s (BAMC) Center for the Intrepid (CFI). That program, still in existence today, focuses on the use of kayak fishing and the outdoors to further the wellness journey of injured soldiers. Kayak fishing is a calming experience that is easily adapted to various injuries.
